What else do I need to know about skip sizing?
Consider Your Waste
Before deciding on what skip size you will need, it is a good idea to look at what waste you will be producing. When calculating how much waste you will need to throw into your skip, it is important to remember that not all waste can go in a skip, such as hazardous and dangerous items (including asbestos that requires specialist removal), as well as many electrical. There are other disposal options available for these items, and your local council can advise you of local services. You can also reduce your waste by recycling or selling some of your waste, such as old furniture or timber. Once you have determined how much waste you have to throw in your skip, it is time to select the correct skip size for your waste.
Do You Need Extras?
Once you have decided on what size skip you will require, you can consider any additional extras you may require. If you will be placing a skip on council land, many councils require cones and lighting for the skips exterior, to ensure it is visible to road users. If you will be producing plasterboard waste, you will need a plasterboard bag to keep it separated from the mixed waste. If security is likely to be an issue, you can use a skip cover, or even upgrade to a secure lockable skip.
What does ‘Yard’ mean when talking about skips?
The measurement of ‘Yard’ is commonly used to describe the size of a skip, and as skip is 3-dimensional, the yards are cubed. For example, a 4 yard skip will actually be 4 yards³. The information above provides a better understanding of the skip dimensions and how much waste each size can hold.
Please note, sizes, load capacity and measurements are approximate, and different skip hire companies may have varying sizes.
